Spring cleaning…a time for clearing out the cobwebs and a lot more

spring clean10

Spring cleaning refers to the yearly act of cleaning a house from top to bottom which would take place in the first warm days of the year typically in spring, hence the name. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_cleaning

This is the ideal time to get your home and yourself ready for summer!!

Apart from the obvious deep clean of all rooms, here are some ideas on areas you might not have thought about:

1.  Your fridge and pantry

Empty fridge and freezer, clean thoroughly and only put back what you know you will use. Donate or toss all foods that you have not used in the last six months, all foods that are past their best and obviously any leftovers that don’t look too good. Do the same with the pantry or kitchen cupboard and be ruthless, especially with spices, herbs and condiments.

2.  Linen cupboard:

This is the perfect time to check all the pillows and all the linen before you change to summer linen. Throw or donate all pillows that are not at their best, and any winter linen that you didn’t use and can’t see yourself using. Remember to thoroughly clean or dry clean any duvets, blankets or winter linen before your store them.

3.  Children’s rooms:

Winter is a time when children play indoors a lot, and their bedrooms and playroom tend to get disorganized and messy. This is a great opportunity to get them involved in sorting out their toys. Discard anything broken or incomplete. Donate toys and books they have outgrown. Organise them in a way that makes it easy for kids to keep tidy. Use Ziploc bags for small pieces or puzzle pieces. Then tackle their clothes.

4.  Publications:

Go through the magazines and newspapers. Take out the articles you want to keep, and recycle the rest.

5.  Television:

While you are at it, do you tape TV shows to watch later? Do you have a lot of shows piled up that you haven’t watched, but at the same time you still keep taping them? It’s probably time to tape over or delete some of them.

6.  Computer:

Now do the same with your computer. Clear out your emails, and go through your files. Delete as you go, and backup where necessary.

7.  mental clutter.

The most important things to look at are any preconceptions and limiting ideas you may have. If you see yourself as always being overwhelmed and in a state of constant crisis or chaos, you will be. Your confidence and positive attitude are your most valuable assets. Before you can have a clean home and an organized life, you must be convinced that you can. Never forget that being organized means having your life functioning in an efficient manner. It’s about having your things in a place where you can find and easily access them. It’s about having systems in place that allow us to pay our bills when they are due, make it to appointments on time and prioritize our obligations in a way that best benefits ourselves and our families.

Here’s to an organized and carefree summer!

Our lovely organizing expert Tracey Foulkes tells us how to clear out the clutter…

Figen Genco of Genco Organizers in Richboro, USA has observed an unchanging rule: “When people are in balanced and harmonious environments, they are much happier. They work better. They are efficient and productive. They understand more easily, as a result, they learn faster. They feel in control. They enjoy life, themselves, and whatever they do.

We all have them in our homes, be it for entertainment or for work, but when they get damaged, we generally just throw DVDs/CDs away. Yet, they could easily be used as coasters when you’re entertaining.

Don’t stop there though, if you’re the arty type, embellish it with fabric or beads. Go crazy to personalise your CD/DVD, making it the toast of the day!

Newspapers are everywhere and many people don’t bother to recycle them. But years ago, my creative brother decided to use them to wrap Christmas presents and I think it was a brilliant idea.

(If you think it is a little boring, make it look colourful with bows and ribbons and homemade cards.)
